What a way to end the year π and welcoming a new Doctor to our lab, Congratulations to Andrea who was just awarded her PhD and is joining us in the Drs club !!!! Also she passed with very minor edits, well done on a brilliant and extremely successful PhD.
Always hard to say goodbye
It has been 5 fabulous years with Dr Christopher Szeto in the lab, and it is time for him to move on to a new challenge π thanks for the fantastic time in science, fun, communications, art, and so much more. Been a real pleasure to work with such a talented scientist.

Crystal 34, SCANZ conference in Bendigo
The Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand meeting was held in Bendigo at the La Trobe University campus π Andrea won a Rising Star awards and Stephanie the Sandy Mathieson medal π

We were extremely lucky to have both Prof. Jenny Martin (Australia) and Elspeth Garman (UK), two world leaders in protein crystallography as well as remarkable mentors of the next generation of scientists, visiting and presenting at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS).

ASI conference in Melbourne
The 50th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology was held in Melbourne. This 50th annual meeting will be a significant milestone in the history of the society. This will be the first time since 2019 that the society will be meeting altogether in-person. In addition, it will be 25 years since Peter Doherty and Rolf Zinkernagel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. We have much to celebrate!

AIDS Kumamoto conference, Japan
It was such a pleasure to travel back to Japan and be invited to the AIDS conference in Kumamoto. A lot of amazing science, new collaborators, and terrific food as well.

Combio conference, Melbourne
The Combio conference went very smoothly, it was a great opportunity for a lot of us to reconnect after 2 years of pandemic mostly in lockdown in Melbourne, and for many to return to face to face conference. Our new PhD student Lawton did an amazing job presenting his work on COVID-19 published in Nature Communications π
IBS, EMBL, ESRF, Grenoble, France
This was the last stop of our “European tour” in Grenoble (France) where the ESRF (European synchrotron) is located, near the EMBL and IBS (institute for Structural Biology). It was a great opportunity to have a look at the latest technologies from those 3 institutes.
Biochemistry Institute, Franckfurt, Germany
We went to visit the institute, Chris and Steph gave a talk, then we talked about science all day with students and researchers, then we had some amazing dinner with our host.
Pasteur Institute, Paris, France
We were lucky to visit the institute with our collaborator, went to the roof top terrace of the institute (amazing view), and also got the chance to present our work on HIV and COVID-19.
ECM22, Versailles, France
An opportunity not to miss, a conference on crystallography in Versailles!!! what an amazing place to discover more about worldwide research and new hot topic in X-ray crystallography.

QLD visit
In June it was the time to go to sunny Queensland and visits a few institutes (UQ, QIMR, TRI, IMB)
The TRI building is amazing with its own rainforest thanks for the warm welcome and great discussion. Thanks for inviting me Navarro Severine to present our work on COVID19 at QIMR Berghofer. It was great to meet so many people today, discover the amazing research done in Brisbane ! Thanks to Kirsty Short at UQ for showing me around and meeting some people at the IMB as well. looking forward to more collaborations
